Day 11 – Favorite Solo Idol

February 15, 2012

Matsuura Aya

Matsuura Aya – Good Bye Natsuo (Wild Ayaya Version)

The only real competition she had as I thought about this question was Mikitty… oh, who am I kidding, I chose Ayaya right away. I feel sorry for writing a blog entry after giving such little consideration to the question, but hey, who else is there? The world is pretty weak of solo idols these days. I mean, AKB’s candidates are at best too recent to say anything, and to be honest, I find it unlikely Acchan or Tomochin will ever reach Ayaya’s awesomeness as a solo idol.

I feel very different about soloists than I do about groups. For soloists, talent really matters. When I’m watching a whole group, chance is someone will be doing something interesting at any time, and the camera can change to show me just that. But if I’m going to watch a single person for over an hour, she’d better be worth it, or I’ll get bored fast. There aren’t many idols I’ve seen that can handle that. Mikitty was going to be great, but I think she hadn’t yet reached her full potential when she moved to Momusu, and as great as she turned out, it doesn’t count as a soloist. Yuuko’s career never went anywhere (please please don’t kill me) – and I won’t even mention Johnson. I actually liked Nacchi’s lives, but still, her solo career was very hit and miss for me. Never liked Gocchin, even when she was in Momusu. So, unless I go back to the 80s/90s (and I’d rather not), or commit the double sin of stretching the "idol" definition and insulting Hikki by considering her an idol, Ayaya it is.

Ayaya is the perfect idol. I don’t think that’s an exaggeration. I can’t think of a single bad thing about her. Now, that doesn’t mean she’s necessarily my overall favorite – after all, we all have our biases different types, and she doesn’t quite fit mine. But it doesn’t make her any less perfect. She’s beautiful, a great performer in every way, can show as much personality as appropriate to any TV show, and can do every variation of the idol image from the cutesy to the cool to the JAV (oh no it was a look alike). Her whole discography is one of those things that will guarantee I never look back to H!P as a huge time waster.

Wait you were watching someone who looked like Ayaya having sex?? =O

I like your choice~* and i totally agree with everything you’ve said here about her…talent~looks~performance~just everything. In hindsight it’s too bad that Tsunku pulled the rug out from Mikitty’s solo career and then she had to battle with the rest of the group for attention and coveted solo lines =/. I still remember a bit of fan outrage right after she was put into Momusu…..when you watch some of pvs even from back then she had star written all over her~*. I liked Gomaki in her idol form before she went all Avex girl~diva….i mean her career was heading that way for sure and even her look but i thought the catchy/cute stuff was much better written overall..did love her “how to use sexy” album though. It’s funny after awhile she wasn’t even Tsunku’s vision musically anymore….

    Oh Ayaya where art thou?

There’s an AV series of an Ayaya look alike. I can’t remember her name right now, I think it was Ran something…

I know there’s also a series for Nacchi, but I thought it didn’t look like her at all. And I read a review by Ray of a W AV too, and it also seemed very bad.
