Guide to AKB TV Shows – Part 1

February 28, 2012

This is a quick introduction to every AKB TV show I can think of. Description, personal opinion, 1 to 5 rating. They are ordered in the order I’d like to have seen them, if I were new to the fandom. Both doramas and TV shows are mixed, and it should be obvious in the description what every show is. I have no intention of covering every AKB show, because I haven’t seen all of them, . I’ve been saying AKB everywhere in this paragraph but all the 48 groups are included. Oh, and I’ll post it in parts because it’s getting big. Let’s start:

akbingo

  • AKBINGO! – The flagship AKB variety show. It’s the longest running – even if we don’t count the time way back when it was called 0ji 59fun and then 1ji 59fun, it’s still the longest. The great thing about that is, watching it, you’ll end up knowing pretty much everyone in AKB who ever had a chance at being popular. It’s too bad they still spend a lot of time with some uninteresting games when they’ve had so many good ideas already… They have the bad habit of returning to the typical idol variety combination of word games, Antonio Inoki jokes and nasty food. The best segment of all AKB shows is here – Shoujiki Shougi, the source for half of the trivia about AKB members that it seems like every fan knows. Or should. By the way, this is a segment where two members fight each other psychologically, by proposing sentences that the other must answer negatively, under the watch of a lie detector (see screenshot). For all the episodes when they do that, and a few other of my favorite segments, I’d rate them 6. But sometimes, they hardly deserve a 2. Overall, 3.

nemousu

  • Nemousu - THE BEST. Really, you should start here and watch it in parallel with AKBINGO!. AKBINGO! you kinda have to watch sooner rather than later, because so much of the characters are established in it. But Nemousu is the best one. This show is about putting idols in uncomfortable situations and seeing how they come out of it. But in a good way, not the stupid "let’s make them eat insects and throw pies at them". Simpler things, like having them walk into gay bars and try to appeal to the local customers and expand the AKB fandom to a new market, learn to drive airplanes (including how to communicate in English with the control tower), go up Mount Fuji, get buried alive, or organize a handshake event with farm animals. I can think of only one episode until now that was a bad and boring idea and I prefer to skip, and I’ve seen the rest multiple times. The special, 1hour+ episodes are also highly recommended. Rating 5.

shukanakb

  • Shukan AKB – The other AKB variety show. This one is very unstable… When it’s good, it completely destroys all the competition – AKBINGO! doesn’t stand a chance. But then, sometimes it seems the producers get lazy… and it turns generic and forgettable. You have to keep watching it and wait for the gems though. Actually, now that I think about it, these days it’s on par with AKBINGO!… consistently good, but rarely special. They used to have these somewhat special episodes, where they’d do some different plan that went for two or three episodes, and later released extra DVDs. Those are AWESOME. But they haven’t done it for a while, I think a year now? Long time anyway. Honorable mention goes to the swimming pool episodes, released on DVD with such extras as a bikini fashion show and a lot of performances (see photo). By the way, the DVDs usually include more complete versions of the aired shows too, so you could get just that. Rating 3.

majigakuen

  • Majisuka Gakuen – It’s overrated as a dorama… maybe… if you still don’t know the characters. Well, maybe you would have as much fun as I did anyway, but watching it after a fair deal of other shows, it was a lot of fun to just see how every single character and event in the dorama is somehow related to the respective idol’s image and position in the real group. The whole story is genius and deserves a separate post. I say it’s overrated because, if I was watching it with no interest in AKB at all… I’m not sure I’d care quite as much about it. It’s good, but it’s not special by itself. Q10 would be a better example of a dorama that would get me interested in the group, if I didn’t know it – although that’d be just interest in Acchan. Oh, and if anyone hasn’t heard, the dorama is about Acchan being cool and kicking everybody’s ass… meaning it has a bunch of schoolgirls fighting. That’s all you really need to know, if you’re not excited about it yet, not your thing. Rating 4.

bimyo

  • Bimyo~ – This is AKB’s comedy show – the answer to the old comedy sketches on Hello! Morning, if you know those… and if you do, you already know your opinion about this show. It’ll be the same. Well, almost. The big difference here is that, while H!M had permanent characters and settings, and some continuity to the stories from one episode to the next, Bimyo~ is all about short, independent sketches. There are few cases of recurring themes here, and they’re usually in the same episode. Quality is unstable, but usually good enough. No episode is all bad, but every one has something I just didn’t find funny. Rating 4.

And to close for now, here’s one of the cutest videos in human history:

Say Harima, about Shoujiki Shougi, what was the accuracy for the lie detector machine again…? *tries to keep a straight face while asking*

    • February 28, 2012 8:27 am

      99.9%! It’s amazing!

Say Henkka, have you gone download Nemousu already? Planning to anytime soon? Just checking whether I got the main point of this post across =P Even got a cute shot of Sayaka to bias your attention.

  2. February 28, 2012 12:08 pm

    Haha. Thanks for that.

Yes, you and Krv double-teaming and pressuring me into downloading it, I’ve begun to do just that. You can rest easy now. Oh, and the Sayaka shot is appreciated. Though thanks to the influence of AKBINGO, aside from Sayaka I’ve warmed up to lots of other girls, too. I quite like Oshima, Miyazawa (these two along with Akimoto form my top 3, I guess), Shinoda, Ohori, Watanabe, Matsui (Jurina), Itano, Kuramochi, Kitahara… I’m having loads of fun watching through my huge backlog of AKBINGO episodes. Doesn’t feel like a chore at all — unlike with H!M at times.

    • February 28, 2012 12:26 pm

      Watanabe? Oh, Mayuyu… MAYUYU? Really?

All the others are very much expected, since I never thought for a minute that you’d go to the Acchan side. Yuko all the way. But Mayuyu? … after all these years you still surprise me =D

Well, keep having fun, and do tell me someday what you see in Mariko if you ever come up with a compelling explanation. Not that I’m expecting much, because I never come up with any. But hey, always worth asking.

      • February 28, 2012 4:11 pm

Well, Mayu is first of all really pretty. I honestly see some classic idol beauty in her face. Think young Shizuka Kudo or something. But more than that, I just feel a sense of Killer Bitch in her. Just, lurking in there, slightly poking out its ugly head out of her pretty exterior shell…

I just, I feel like I wouldn’t want to piss her off.

I dunno, maybe I’m just imagining it. Obviously all I’ve seen from AKB is AKBINGO up until mid-2010. I don’t have much to go on yet. :P

As for Mariko, I just like her boke character, man. She plays the boke role, but if you look at her, she somehow kinda has something about her face that says “smart”. You know what I mean? Like, you look at Kojima’s face, and you can be pretty sure she’s probably never had a half-decent idea floating around that head of hers in her life. Sort of like Sayumi, you know? Now, Mariko, on the other hand…

And yes, that is just completely unfair face racism on my part. I do acknowledge that. :P

      • February 28, 2012 7:37 pm

=P Unfortunately I can’t think of any time she exercised her dark side… Well, there’s her character in Majisuka… which you’ll see eventually. So I’ll shut up. But yeah, Mayu is great. Not only classic idol beauty, she fits the whole package of “classic idol”. They even make fun of that in Bimyo~, in the photo I uploaded here – she is giving the others a lesson in Orthodox Idolhood. Also, these.

All AKBINGO! up until mid-2010 is already plenty. Especially when it comes to the senbatsu, since they disappeared from pretty much all AKB shows these days…

Yeah, Mariko does look smart. Definitely more than Kojima, but come on, give the poor girl a break. Kojima is pretty much a baka character in AKB, try watching her Mechaike apperances =P She was in two exams. They were with a bunch of other unknown people, instead of full AKB specials like Momusu had, but I liked them anyway.

Good read. For the most part I agree with everything you’ve written. I give Shukan AKB a bit more credit than you though. I feel that if anything, AKBINGO is more hit or miss than Shukan. I don’t really get bored watching Shukan, but I understand that there are episodes that are a bit drawn out.. 2 parters, slow paced with members that are hardly interesting, etc.

I like how Shukan has a wide range, it could be funny or serious. You never really know what you’re gonna get until you watch the episode.

Nemousu is great. I haven’t seen it all, and I’m watching it in a completely random order. Do you know if anyone’s subbed any episodes of it? Other than the 2 by AIDOL that is.

I bought Nemousu season’s 5 and 6 on DVD and that’s been the only exposure I’ve had to it. I watched them both straight one saturday. I eventually want to get the rest of the box sets.. rather buy them to watch them than download cause then I won’t be forced to pay money for them.. and I wanna up my collection. lol, I haven’t seen the specials though.. I would rather downlaod those because I don’t want to pay so much for a short DVD..

any suggestions as to which specials I should go check out?

btw, that’s one of favorite Bimyo scenes.. lol, though I’m not a big fan of the show.. as you said, inconsistant. I like seeing Amina, Hirajima, Lemon and Shimada dressed as roaches stuck in a glew trap though. That’s always fun.

    good read

I don’t use subs, so I have no idea =/

You should go check out all of the Nemousu specials, you can’t go wrong =D But since you’ve asked… To be honest, I have a bit of trouble remembering what were specials and what were normal episodes, since most of Nemousu goes on for at least two episodes so it’s pretty long anyway… There’s the one where they learned to pilot airplanes, that was interesting. I think it was a special =/ And another where they went, I think to Korea, and did the usual idol thing of going up a very tall tower and then jumping from it, that I also think was a special =/ but I won’t remember their names anyway, so everything I said has been useless. I’ll check and get back to you later with that.

Every single Bimyo~ episode had one scene I thought was VERY good. This one with Tomochin is one of the best of them, sure, but every episode still had one. In that sense, it was consistent. As for the rest, well, I actually thought the roaches thing went on for a bit too long for my taste. They can’t possibly please everybody in a comedy show, that’s impossible… so they’re doing well enough, I think.

Sorry, had a bunch of stuff to finish… also wrote half of my next post. Anyway, my favorite Nemousu specials:

110417 AKB48 Nemousu TV Special ~Mogitate Kenkyuusei in Guam~ – this is the one where Lemon learns to fly. seriously, I still can’t believe that a TV show put idols to pilot an airplane, this is crazy on a completely absurd level, this is best example of why I love Nemousu so much. Must see.

101225 AKB48 Nemousu TV Special ~Ase to Namida no Supokon Matsuri~ – well, I’m not so sure about recommending this one… it’s a different kind of great. This shows both Saechan training / applying to be a professional bowler, and Takajo / Shimada Haruka in a tennis championship. Not the usual funny Nemousu style, but I liked it a lot too.

100923 SKE48 – Nemousu TV Special ~SKE48 Gakuin Shuugaku Ryokou~ – this one has… well, a lot of stuff. SKE members only, and there’s more of them than I can recognize. They get divided in teams and go around on an excursion doing a lot of different games, so it’s hard to describe… It’s great though. And there’s a lot of beautiful places in it. My favorite part is a segment in the middle, the classic excursion scene with all the members sleeping together in a huge room, and Jurina goes around waking people up. Dokkiri.

I can’t find the one with the bungee jump, wonder if I burned it to DVD or something… I hope I haven’t lost it… or maybe it wasn’t a special.

      • February 29, 2012 12:15 pm

Thank you for your helpfulness! I don’t use subs typically either. lol, but occasionally if they’re available I get them because it makes everything much more clear. But I understand most of the shit, so I’m fairly indifferent.

I’m at work now, but when i get home I’m going to torrent all of those. If I like them I’m going to buy them for my collection. Thanks once again. I saw something about Sae and that proffesional bowling in season 6, but it showed flashbacks to her training that I didn’t see. I suppose its from the special. And I’m a huge Takajo fan… so anything with her I’m really into. As well as very very, very, interested in Shimada Haruka… so seeing her do her tennis is a must.

im hype to get home now
